Don’t Stress Out About Tire Pressure

General guidance about checking your tire pressure

It’s true that you should leave most car maintenance to an experienced auto mechanic, but you should still keep a regular maintenance checklist in mind. You preserve the typical lifespan of your car when you perform simple service checks yourself. So what’s at least one car maintenance tip that you can safely do on your own?

Check Your Tire Pressure

It’s as simple as that. Why do you need to maintain the correct tire pressure for your vehicle? Poorly inflated tires waste gallons of fuel -- it’s like driving your car on marshmallows. In addition, you protect your tires’ tread from preventative damage, which allows you to go longer before replacing your tires.

What makes the air leak? Tires naturally leak air over time. If you accidentally drive over nails, glass, stones, or other objects that puncture the rubber of your tire, you increase the natural rate of air leakage. Heat makes air leak out faster as well, and it takes a single mile to make your tires hot, due to the friction of the road.

We at Tireworld Auto Service suggest checking your tire pressure at least once a month. They probably won’t need to be inflated that often, but they need to be checked frequently and regularly. You’ll need a tire gauge to give you an accurate reading.

What is the correct tire pressure in pounds? You can find the number on the yellow sticker of the windshield by the driver’s side. If the sticker has been torn away, you can look up the answer in the owner’s manual.

It’s important to check the pressure when the tires are cold. Hot tires cannot give correct readings since hot air expands inside the tire. Make sure the car hasn’t been driven for at least an hour so the tires are at their dormant temperature.

Checking your tire pressure is simple and quick. Don’t neglect your vehicle; if you have any further questions, call Tireworld and we’ll gladly answer all your concerns.
