Four (Plus Two) Ways to Prepare your Vehicle for Winter

Winter isn’t a joke when you live near Rochester, New York. We receive an average of 100 inches of snow per year, which means we’re driving through snowstorms anywhere from October to April (and occasionally May). All of us, especially new drivers, need to follow several winter precautions. Let’s work together to keep our roads as safe as possible despite the weather!

Things to Bring in your Vehicle

  1. shovel and snow scraper

You never know when you might end up in a ditch, but everyone is equally susceptible to it. Keep both a shovel and a snow scraper in your truck where they’re not in the way of your passengers, but still provide quiet assurance you can get your car out of any drift!

  1. jumper cables

Cold weather increases the viscosity of car fluid, which can make your engine difficult to start. Keep a set of jumper cables in your car at all times and memorize this saying:

+Red on Dead

+Red on Donor

-Black on Donor

Black to Bare Metal

Start Donor

Start Dead

  1. tire chains or tire socks

Ttire chains will get you through snowstorms, but they can be difficult to mount and break easily. Another option? Tire socks. Tire socks slip on easily over your tires and provide additional traction with the snow. However, both options limit your speed to 30 mph. Once you’re free of the drift or snowbank, you can remove the socks or chains.

  1. spare phone charger

How many times do we (or a loved one) end up in a snowy car accident only to have our phone die right when we needed it most? If your car has a USB port, keep a phone charger plugged in at all times. If you do, help is only a phone call away.

Things to Equip to your Vehicle

  1. winter wiper blades

Winter wiper blades provide a heavy-duty solution to snow and slush buildup (especially useful if you car is parked outdoors overnight). And here’s a secret: you can use them year-round since they’re just as helpful during rainstorms.

  1. winter tires

Winter tires are specially designed to handle snow and ice. They are worth the investment, especially for us Northerners. Keep in mind, the more time spent driving with winter tires is less time spent on your summer or all-season tires, so don’t think you’re wasting your money.

We hope this helps prepare you for the next few months of winter driving! If you have any further questions, call 585-671-4120 and we’ll be glad to help you out!
