Two Winter Boogiemen that Account for Countless Auto Fatalities

A typical upstate New York winter wrecks plenty of havoc on our drivers. The FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) reports snowy and icy roads claim 1,300 lives each year. Far more become fatally injured. We all need to do our part to keep our roads as safe as possible this winter.

We’ve come up with a few of winter’s most common accident-prone conditions that lead to these fatalities. We’ve included some helpful to tips so that you’ll know exactly what to do if you find yourself in a similar situation.

  1. Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning occurs when your tires lose traction because of moisture on the road. Your vehicle can easily slip out of control and you can lose power over the steering wheel. What can you do about it?

When you approach a wet area, first decrease your general speed. Most drivers know they need to drive slower in winter. But this rule-of-thumb takes on an urgency when you realize nearly 10% of all car accidents happen as a direct result of icy roads. Try decreasing your speed before your tires hit areas on the road where water collects.

Second, judge the depth of the water. The deeper the water, the faster your vehicle will lose traction. The tread on your tires also contributes to your ability to slow down and maintain control over your vehicle, so make sure your tread depth is close to new.

  1. Mud and Snow

Mud and snow create dangerous driving circumstances--why else would tire manufacturing companies create tries specifically designed to combat the dangerous terrain when mud and snow are present?

Once again, make sure your tires have a healthy tread depth. More than that, be sure to increase your stopping distance up to 12 times. You might get accused of being that “ol’ granny driver,” but if you successfully avoid an accident, you’ll be glad you were extra cautious.
