Drive in a Line, Not a Spring

Drive in a Line, not a spring

Sure it’s finally spring, but you don’t want to drive like one.

As soon as the weather starts to get nicer, car owners often get an adrenalin rush out of driving faster, even though the conditions still aren’t quite safe.

The skid tracks in the snow along the main highways and backroads give us enough evidence of crazy driving. As the snow melts and creates deep trenches of slush and loose gravel, you’re more likely to hydroplane into a ditch. Water won’t give you any more traction than the snow did.

We’ve got some tips that can spring your driving on to excellence!

Tips that Can Rescue You from Erratic Spring Driving:

1. Check your tire pressure

As the temperature increases, you’ll lose about 1-2 psi in your tires for every 10 degrees temperature change. The less inflated your tires are, the less traction you’ll have through wet areas. Make sure you check your tire pressure about once a month, but especially in the fall and the spring when the Rochester area experiences more drastic temperature changes. You’ll find the correct pressure range on the side of your tire.

2. Watch out for animals

Animals become especially active during the spring, aka post-hibernation. They’ll be searching for food and a mate along back roads and wooded areas. Stay alert in places where you're most likely going to run into them (no pun intended).

3. Beware of poor road conditions

Winter takes its toll on the roads. Melting snow will reveal deep crevices and potholes. If you can’t see how deep is the pothole, assume the worst and slow down -- but don’t swerve into the other lane. You’ll save your suspension system if you take poor road conditions seriously.

4. Look for cyclists and pedestrians

As nicer weather comes, everyone is going to be excited to get some fresh air and exercise. Keep an eye out for people walking or biking alongside the road, and give them a wide birth. Even though daylight savings has just come and gone, it’s still not quite light enough during the evening rush hour to see those who aren’t wearing reflectors.

If you have any other driving concerns for the new season, just call 585-671-4120 and we’ll do all we can to quiet your fears and put a spring back in your step -- and your driving.
