How to Tell if your Brakes Need Repair

How to Tell if your Brakes Need Repair

Brakes are one of the most important components of your car, so if they break down (no pun intended), you’ll need to get them repaired immediately. What are some signs that will let you know your brakes need attention?

Brake Repair

  1. Does your car shake when you apply the brakes?

If you feel your car shaking, you probably have a warped rotor. You can get a warped rotor from applying the brakes after you’ve already worn away the brake pad. If you don’t get your rotors and brake pads replaced as soon as possible, you can start grinding metals which will permanently damage those components of your car. You can save some money on extensive repairs by replacing rotors as soon as you’re aware of the problem. Better yet, get your brake pads replaced every 20,000-30,000 miles and you’ll avoid damaging your rotors.

2. Does the brake pedal feel “spongy” or soft?Brake Repair

If you can push the brake pedal all the way to the floor, you probably have a problem with the brake line.

(Helpful Hint: The warning brake light on your dashboard should light up if you have a brake line leak, but it might not if you have a loose electrical connection, so you can’t rely on the light all the time.)

A brake line leak will cause your brake fluid reservoir to slowly empty. The brake fluid circulates in a closed system, which means you shouldn’t lose brake fluid if everything is functioning normally. If your brake fluid levels are low, you probably have a leak in one of your brake lines. Once you get your brake line repaired by a licensed mechanic, check your brake fluid levels and make sure the reservoir is topped off to replace what leaked away.

3. Does Your Car Pull to One Side When you’re Braking?Brake Repair

If you feel your car tugging to one side while you’re braking, you probably have uneven pressure in your brake lines. If one of your brake lines is weak, your calipers will tighten at unevenly levels, which results in uneven wear in your brake pads. You’ll eventually have to replace your calipers, brake pads, and maybe your brake lines as well.

If you’re unsure how to maintain and repair your brakes, we’d be happy to answer any questions and diagnose the problem. Call 585-671-4120 or research some repair information on our website.
